Mrauk-U, the lost Arakan Kingdom

Mrauk U is a little known archeological site in Western Myanmar, which receives very few visitors compared to it’s cultural value and historical significance, smaller but certainly in the same league as Bagan or Angkor Wat.
From 1430 until 1785, it was the capital of the Mrauk U Kingdom, the most important and powerful Rakhine (Arakanese) kingdom, until it’s conquest by the Burmese Konbaung Dynasty in 1784. Mrauk U houses a rich collection of temples and pagodas, constructed of hewn stone bricks, unlike the mud and clay bricks of Bagan. The site is currently in the process of being nominated to UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
Although located in a tropical region, Mrauk U enjoys lower temperatures when the Northeastern Monsoon falls. From mid October to mid March during the Dry Season, temperatures can drop to 13 °C (55 °F). It’s often foggy mornings give it an eerie appearance, making it a beloved site for landscape photographers and travelers alike.
Access to Mrauk U is possible via car or boat, from Sittwe, and visiting the site opens up opportunities for various trip extensions on the way.
